Captain Cook's HMB Endeavour – an exploration

2020 marks the 250th anniversary of Captain James Cook's voyages along the east coast of Australia and the HMB Endeavour replica will play a major role in the national commemorations. Construction of the replica began in 1988 and the ship was launched 5 years later. Since then she has sailed over 170 000 nautical miles, circumnavigated the world multiple times and visited 29 countries and 116 ports.

This presentation will give you an armchair view of both above & below decks of this amazingly accurate Australian built replica. See and hear how the ship was sailed and operated. Get a glimpse of life on board, from the 98 sailors and marines to the officers and scientists and to Captain Cook himself. The table is set, clothes are hung and the cat is slumbering, so on the eve of this significant anniversary come along to hear about this amazing vessel and her captain and their place in Australia’s history.

Presenter:  Ron Ray has been a volunteer guide and member of the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) for 15 years after retiring from a corporate career in human resources and training, including a number of years working as a part time teacher in TAFE.

He is also a member of the ANMM and spent 10 years in the Army working in signals and artillery. His other volunteer activities include volunteering with the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust in several roles including the visitor centre on Cockatoo Island and guiding tours through fortifications at both North Fort and Headland Park. Ron’s particular interests are in 18th century military and naval history, HMB Endeavour, the ANMM fleet of vessels and the collection contained in the museum galleries.
